Troubleshooting Cross Forest Delegation

Setting up a untrusted  cross-forest environment supports a simple Free/Busy query between two the forests using „galsynced“ contacts.  This feature I described in article  Cross-Forest Free/Busy without Federation and its corresponding troubleshooting guide.

In this article I want to share some experiences with troubleshooting the Cross-Forest Delegation feature. Cross-Forest Delegation allows completly to manage a delegated calendar even if people are placed in different mail-organizations. But there must be a domain-trust in place.

To synchronize objects I prefer NETsec's GALsync, which is much easier to use than Microsofts FIM etc.

Free/Busy between two Exchange Online / Office365 Organizations

In this blog I will describe how you can provide Free/Busy information between different Exchange Online / Office 365 organizations.
Usually people are able to send requests to share calendar individually, but we want to implement an enterprise-wide configuration.
If you want that all the mailobjects of your partners organization are present in your own Global Address List (GAL) then you can use a tool like NETsec's GALsync.

Between 2 Exchange Online Partners you do not need to establish a Federation Trust or configure autodiscover records because this is already present (by default).

Cross-Forest Free/Busy without Federation

We want to supply GAL between 2 untrusted Active Directory forests with Exchange organizations. This we will perform with NETsec's GALsync software.
Additionally we want to share Free/Busy information without configuring a Microsoft Federation (using the MS Federation Gateway). We do not want to use the Free/Busy feature of GALsync.

In this article I will demonstrate the procedure to supply Free/Busy in this way.

GALsync recommended by MVP Peter Bruzzese

"GALsync is one of those products that does exactly what it advertises. In fact, with the ability to handle free/busy information, combined with so many necessary features (everything from method of export/import to encryption options to specific attribute export selection) it goes above and beyond what I expected based on first glance."

says J. Peter Bruzzese at msexchange.org, taking a look at NETsec's GALsync.

Warning- Diagnostic logging saves data to the Application log. The log should be carefully monitored since it can fill and/or cause performance degredation on the server monitored.

GALsync, Exchange Server 2010 SP2 and GAL Segmentation

Question:

. . . we have recently installed GALsync 4 into our environment to share GALS with a similar sized third party company. My question is, when we run the import - which works perfectly well, it (obviously) doubles the size of our GAL - which makes life a little more complicated for our user base.

Is there a documented procedure you can recommend - that would enable us to view the imported contacts (in this case some 14,000) in their own dedicated address book - and NOT in the GAL itself.

See answer her:

GALsync and Federation using Exchange 2010 - Part II

Information workers frequently need to collaborate with external recipients such as vendors, partners, and customers, and share their availability (free/busy) information, calendar, or contacts. So we speak about

1.     Federated free/busy sharing
Access free/busy information of an external user in a partner's company. The published Exchange availability service of the partner's company answers directly using the requested information from user's mailbox. No public system folder is used anymore.

2.     Federated calendar sharing
Access calendar information of an external user in a partner's company. The user has to ask the external user to share his calendar by using the features of Outlook or Outlook Web App.

3.     Federated contact sharing
Access private contacts information of an external user in a partner's company. The user has to ask the external user before to share his contacts by using the features of Outlook or Outlook Web App.

In this second part I will give a technical level overview about what Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Federation services provide and what the limitations are.

GALsync Special - Part 2 :: Free Busy (Update)

What happens behind the scenes when synchronizing free/busy data between multiple Exchange organizations using GALsync?

When synchronizing different mail organizations GALsync reads the free/busy information of selected user objects in source and stores them in target as free/busy information related to the synchronized contact object.

GALsync does not sync free/busy every time it is modified in source. You might want to export free/busy times in a time window of minimal 5 minutes.

GALsync Introduction - Part 2 :: Topologies

If you want to share address lists between multiple forests (cross-forest sync) different topologies are to be considered. Using GALsync in a mesh-topology provides a synchronizing of Global Address List between each Exchange organization, in a uni-directional 2-way sync only data between a source and a target organization would be exchanged. In this blog we describe the basics of different topologies realizing a synchronization model as you need.

Press Release: GALsync - an elegant solution for integrating multiple Active Directory forests

3d2f.com editors called the program GALsync "the best among the like" and "the most promising in its class".
Below we publish the editor's article:

"Full of partial integration of several Active Directory forests may be required in a number of situations. For instance, a company may be using two or more forests for different groups of employees -- the core one for the company as a whole and a separate one for the international or regional sales personnel. Another example would be a company take-over or merger -- two or more AD forests would have to be integrated. Solving this problem could be potentially very time-consuming and technically complex. Fortunately, there is a tool can make this task a snap. It's called GALsync. "

ILM 2007 and GALsync

The Need
There are some companies - small or large, most working on international level - which have to handle multiple Active Directories and multiple Exchange organizations.
Outlook users inside one of each organization can list all mail addresses and some more information like phone numbers and departments in the so called Global address list.
Open Outlook, click New message, click To . . . and you will get all addresses of your companies employees. But: what about your colleagues in the other companies organization?
